FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS | HAIR TRANSPLANT
What is Hair Transplant?
A hair transplant is not the same as hair, or even “getting The words hair implant, hair graft, micro transplant, micro implant, etc., should actually refer only to the TYPE OF OPERATION, not to the amount of hair transplanted; although today this colloquial way of speaking has become commonly accepted. The words hair implant, hair graft, micro transplant, micro implant, etc., should actually refer only to the TYPE OF OPERATION, not to the amount of hair transplanted; although today this colloquial way of speaking has become commonly accepted. Still, it’s necessary to make an important clarification here:
Human hair doesn’t always grow in isolation but in groups of 1, 2, 3 and 4 hairs at most, and this is what we call FOLICULAR UNITS. On average, each follicular unit can be assumed to be equivalent to about 2.2 hairs.
*So in a hair transplant operation what we implant are actually follicular units.
What exactly does a hair graft operation consist of?
The first thing to bear in mind is that a hair transplant operation will not increase the amount of hair you have, but will only redistribute it, that’s to say, it will be taken from your donor area (normally the occipital area) and implanted it in your receptor area.
These hairs (or rather, follicles, as we have explained in the previous section) are genetically programmed to grow throughout life.
Who performs the hair transplant operation?
At BJ-CFS Hair Group the surgeons perform the procedure and not the assistants as is the case in a great majority of hair clinics, which is totally prohibited. The surgeons are responsible for extracting the follicles from the donor area and making all the incisions where the follicular units are implanted, taking into account the inclination, direction and appropriate density to obtain a completely natural aesthetic result.
Why do we call it follicular microtransplantation?
Because we implant follicular units and to do it one by one, we need the support of stereoscopic binocular glasses.
Without optical support, it is difficult to extract a single follicular unit and even more complicated to discern how many hairs form each one. In the past (and even today in some “hair clinics”), follicular units were obtained with the naked eye, so often several were extracted at once without any kind of precision and many of them were damaged.
When they were implanted in the receptor area, there was a great loss of efficiency, so at the point where a single follicular unit should have been, they ended up compressing several, some of them also in bad shape, producing the famous doll’s hair effect.
What hair transplant techniques are there?
There are basically two, the FUSS technique and the FUE technique, the latter being more modern, and we can be divide it into the FUE SAV-Zafiro or DHI technique (without visible shaving) and the FUE New Dense-Zafiro or DHI technique. FUE SAV can be used for small quantities of implants, up to 1500 FUs. (i.e. 3,300 hairs, remember that’s equivalent to 2,2 hairs per FU) and subject to the quality of the donor area. FUE New Dense, on the other hand, allows many more implants and is performed in a single day, but in return it is necessary to shave the head. You can learn more about the main characteristics of these techniques on our page: Comparison between Hair Implant Techniques.
The BJ-CG Clinics Hair Transplant Academy of the BJ-CFS Group conducts three-week training sessions. Since the hair clinics perform operations every day (Monday to Friday) you can choose any month for the training (depending on availability). During the training, we teach professionals the different phases of the procedure. Once the course is finished, they will be perfectly capable of performing a transplant procedure from start to finish and will be able to work with their own clinic and branding.
